The musical was re-discovered as a theatrical genre in the Czech environment shortly after the Velvet Revolution, specifically with the staging of Les Misérables, the first modern-style musical (1992, Na Vinohradech Theatre) to be put on in this country. Since that time numerous foreign and original Czech musicals, relying on splendid stage design, décor and costumes, the casting of stars and the engagement of renowned composers and lyricists (M. David, Z. Borovec, D. Landa and K. Svoboda), have been introduced to audiences. They have included Dracula, Galileo, Jesus Christ Superstar, Cleopatra and Rat-catcher. The most popular musicals to be staged in Prague in recent years were Golem (Hybernia Theatre), Excalibur (Ta Fantastika Theatre), Jack the Ripper (Kalich Theatre) and The Producers (Karlín Theatre).
