Legend has it that this Brno Castle took its name from squirrels (veverky), which Prince Konrad, its reputed founder, spotted on a rock above the Svratka River. King Přemysl Otakar II kept his enemies imprisoned at Vevefií. In the 1300s Margrave John Henry of Moravia made the castle one of his main seats. At various times Vevefií also belonged to members of the Swedish royal family and the Greek princely Ypsilanti family. Partially open to the general public, the historical monument offers changing exhibitions, while cultural events take place here on weekends during the main tourist season.
Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)
In the early 20th century, Britain's Prime Minister Churchill, then the Secretary of State for Trade, visited the castle three times as a guest of Maurice Arnold de Forest, his friend and the castle's owner. He even spent, with his wife Clementine, part of his honeymoon there.
