The history of Valtice was closely connected with the fortunes of the local chateau. The Liechtensteins had one of the country's most beautiful chateau complexes built here and founded several monasteries in the town. Built in the latter half of the 1600s, the convent of the Brothers of Charity, with St Augustine's Church, was the first of its kind to be established in Central Europe. Dating from the period 1631-1671, the monumental Church of the Assumption was based on the plans of the Italian architect Tencalla, who was reputedly assisted by Karl Eusebius of Liechtenstein. Also noteworthy is the Neo-Renaissance Town Hall with stucco decoration in its interior. A major wine-growing centre, Valtice is referred to as the chief town of wine. Valtice boasts a Wine-growing Secondary School, founded in 1873, a Wine-growing Academy and the National Wine Centre. Valtice Wine Fairs have been staged since the early 20th century.
