There is a promontory above the Labe in Brandýs nad Labem that from time immemorial has served as a protective shield guarding a ford on the river. Perched on the promontory, the original Brandýs Castle became a residence of the Habsburg monarchs. Under Ferdinand Ithe structure was rebuilt into a splendid Renaissance chateau. Brandýs experienced its heyday under Rudolf II who liked to come here, together with the prominent scholars and artists of that time. Devastated during the Thirty Years` War, the chateau was renovated soon afterwards and monarchs continued to sojourn here until 1918. Today there is the library of Ludwig Salvator of Tuscany and items recalling Emperor Charles I.
